The α1-antitrypsin assay is a screening test in the
diagnosis of chronic protein loss. Alpha-1-antitrypsin belongs
to the group of plasma and tissue serine protease inhibitors in the
human body. Its action is to inhibit the action of
enzymes released during the inflammatory reaction, including the following
proteolytic enzymes, mainly neutrophil elastase, as well as
such as proteinase 3, cathepsin G and, trypsin. Alpha
1-antitrypsin is produced in the liver by hepatocytes
and macrophages.
