Clinical Purpose

Atropine is an alkaloid naturally found in the leaves of many plants of the solanaceous family, including the leaves of wolf's berry nettle and the leaves and seeds of white-rot. It infects the endings of the adnexa of the nervous system, leading to relaxation of the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, bronchi or urinary tract. In its sulfate form, atropine is used to treat spasmodic ailments of the gastrointestinal tract (including liver and intestinal colic), the urinary system (such as renal colic) or asthma. It has been used to restore normal heart rate in bradycardia.
