Clinical significance

Coagulation factor II (prothrombin) is synthesized in the liver as a vitamin K-dependent protein. Active factor X converts prothrombin to thrombin. Congenital prothrombin deficiency manifests itself mainly with bleeding from the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, genital and urinary dróg and following trauma. Rarely, delivery hemorrhages occur.
