Fluoxetine is a drug belonging to the selective inhibitors of
serotonin reuptake. Its action is to block
the transport of serotonin back into the nerve cell. This causes
an increase in serotonin in the central nervous system. Fluoxetine is
antidepressant drug used in adults and also in
obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia, and depression. Determination of
concentration is helpful in monitoring therapy and in suspected
intoxication with the drug. Detectable plasma concentrations are found even
several weeks after drug withdrawal.
