Hypuric acid

Clinical significance

Hypuric acid is excreted in the urine as a result of the binding of sodium benzoate (a common preservative in the food industry) to endogenous glycine. Also, patientsów diagnosed with primary hyperammonemia treated with sodium benzoate for detoxification, i.e. removal of ammonia from the body, have an increase in urinary hypuric acid. In case of toluene poisoning by inhalation, gastrointestinal tract or skóhand, toluene is transformed and oxidation of the methyl group results in the formation of bezoic acid, followed by glucoronic acid and hippuric acid.
