Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland. Called
"sleep hormone" because it is responsible for regulating the rhythm of sleep and
wakefulness. The production of meletonin is related to the rhythm of light and
darkness, depending on the time of day and night it is secreted in different
amount of melanin. In the dark, the pineal gland produces larger amounts of
melatonin, so its concentration in the blood increases. In the case of
diagnosed deficiency of melatonin in serum is possible
supplementation of this hormone pharmacologically. Determination of the concentration of
of melatonin in urine is helpful in determining the dosage of the drug.
