Clinical significance

Metoprolol - a drug of the beta-blocker group, causing a decrease in heart rate, a decrease in the strength of contraction and stroke volume of the heart , as well as lowering blood pressure. The mechanism of action of the drug is to block beta-type adrenergic receptors and thus reduce the action of catecholamines. Metoprolol is used in the treatment of hypertension, tachyarrhythmias and angina pectoris and auxiliary in hyperthyroidism. Determination of metoprolol in urine is performed when drug intoxication or overdose is suspected.
