Clinical relevance

Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) is an enzyme involved in the metabolism of someów immunosuppressive drugs and those used to treat inflammatory bowel disease. Determination of low or no TPMT activity before starting azathioprine or mercaptopurine treatment is helpful in avoiding life-threatening drug complications.
