Clinical significance

More than 20 species of Bartonella have been described in the genus Bartonella, a dozen of which are associated with pathology in humans. The most common are: B. quintana, B. henselae and B. bacilliformis. These bacteria cause diseases called bartonellosis, whichóre likely to present as cat scratch disease, bacteremia, endocarditis, bacterial vasculopathy, hepatic purpura, retinitisóve and optic neuritis. Those who are susceptible to infection are especiallyólly immunocompromised due to HIV infection, taking immunosuppressive drugsóly after transplants, or suffering from cancer. The microorganisms are transmitted by clothes louse, cat flea, mosquitoes. The conclusive criterion for the diagnosis of bartonellosis is the results of serological tests - testing of antibodies of IgM and IgG class in serum.
