Clinical significance

Streptococcus pyogenes is a gram-positive bacterium that causes inflammation and purulent conditions of the góral dróg of the respiratory tract, middle ear, as well as the skin, fascia or endocardium. It can also cause septicemia and postpartum infections. The bacterium produces the toxin streptolysin O (ASO), the enzymes streptokinases (A and B) and deoxyribonucleases (DNAases A-D). DNAases break down free DNA present in purulent secretions, which reduces their viscosity and facilitates the spread of bacteria. Antibodies to DNAase B are an important marker of S. pyogenes infection in patients with scóric infections, as they do not produce antibodies to ASO.
