Clinical significance
Diphtheria is an infectious disease affecting the respiratory tract and skin, caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Infection is transmitted via airborne droplets through contact with an infected person or carrier. Diphtheria may present as pharyngeal, nasal, or laryngeal diphtheria (formerly known as croup); less commonly, it affects the ear or skin. Severe cases may lead to complications involving the respiratory system, heart, kidneys, and nervous system.
