Sodium in feces
Sodium is a cation that determines the normal osmotic pressure of the
osmotic pressure of the extracellular fluid, affects the balance of the
water-electrolyte and acid-base balance. In the presence of
prolonged diarrhea, hypernatremia (an increase in the
sodium concentration) as a result of excessive water loss from the body or
hyponatremia (decreased sodium levels) as a result of the loss of large amounts of
sodium with diarrheal feces. Determination of sodium concentration in feces
diarrheal feces is helpful in diagnosing hyper or hyponatremia in the
body.
