The ALT test is performed from the blood. Its purpose is to determine the level of alanine aminotransferase, which is a liver enzyme.
When alanine aminotransferase activity increases, we are talking about liver cell damage. Aminotransferases are found in the liver, heart and skeletal muscles. If serum aminotransferases are at elevated levels we are dealing with damage to hepatocytes or myocytes.
AlT test when should you do it?
For medical conditions, the test is clinically relevant for:
- liver,
- biliary tract,
- muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis),
An increase in alanine aminotransferase activity indicates damage to liver cells:
- due to viral hepatitis,
toxic liver damage, - cholestasis (bile stasis),
- or infectious mononucleosis,
Increased levels of activity are additionally observed in the course of pancreatitis and treatment with high doses of salicylates.
