Bilirubin fractions

Bilirubin is formed in the liver, spleen or bone marrow as a result of the conversion of hemoglobin released from disintegrating red blood cells. The resulting indirect (free, prehepatic) bilirubin is further converted to direct (bound, hepatic) bilirubin in the liver.

Test performed in the diagnosis of rżnic jaundice, liver disease, diagnosis of genetically determined hyperbilirubinemia.
