It is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of choline esters to choline I
fatty acid. It is formed in the liver AND is one of the markers of the
efficiency of the liver in terms of protein synthesis. ChE activity
decreases in states of significant liver parenchymal damage.
The test also has applications in diagnosing and monitoring the
treatment of organophosphate pesticide poisoning and to evaluate
sensitivity to succinylcholine prior to drug application.
