The test is the primary test in the diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis. Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria are transmitted by ticks.
Symptoms of spirochete infection include:
- Dermal lesions: erythema migrans (enlarging redness with a diameter of > 5 cm, appears from 5 to 60 days after contact with a tick).
- Tick contact
- Joint complaints: joint pain (not always with swelling and redness), mainly of the small joints of the hands, feet, joints of the ankles, but also large joints may be involved: knee, shoulder, hip, elbow.
- Neurological complaints: peripheral nerve involvement (e.g Shoulder plexitis, radiculopathy, polyneuropathy, etc.), symptoms of cranial nerve inflammation (facial nerve, trigeminal nerve, ocular, etc.), symptoms of CNS involvement (pain, dizziness, disorders of memory, intellectual, etc.).
IgM class antibodies can be detected as early as the second week of the disease.
