The assay is performed from a blood sample to determine the fasting serum iron concentration. Iron plays a key role in the human body. It is responsible for the proper functioning of the respiratory, circulatory, immune and nervous systems.
Serum iron
Iron is one of the key minerals. It is responsible
Among other things, it is responsible for the proper functioning of the circulatory and
respiratory system. It is part of hemoglobin, which transports oxygen
to all tissues of the body. Iron plays an important role in the
nervous system, where it influences cognitive functions, also affects the
performance of the body during physical exertion.
The concentration of the level of this element depends on gender. In women
it is usually lower than in men (which is related to the
different physiology). In the case of women, the concentration of iron decreases with
with age and during menstruation (menstruation). The demand for
this element also increases during pregnancy.
Sources of the best absorbed iron are meat and
meat products, offal, poultry, fish and eggs.
It is also worth consuming vegetable sources of iron, i.e. whole-grain
cereal products, nuts, seeds and grains, dried fruits, dry
legume seeds and some vegetables (including beets and
chard, broccoli, green peas, spinach, parsley) and fruits
(e.g., currants, avocados, raspberries).
